Someone once asked me what it was like being a cat breeder and what I liked the most. Being a pedigree cat breeder can be a tough gig. Some people just don't understand the bond between cats and humans. For example, dog people don't understand cat people and cat people for the most part don't understand dog people. I have had some business associates who boldly admit they hate cats...well, quite honestly our differences are what make the world go around.
Being a pedigree cat breeder has many rewards as well as its share of heartaches. For example, taking a sick queen to the vet to find out she has an issue that precludes her from being part of a breeding program, can be heartbreaking. Or worse yet, the 2:00 a.m. trip to the emergency vet clinic for an emergency c-section and spay can be emotionally heartbreaking as a huge financial undertaking.
For me, what I find the most rewarding is the emails and photos I receive from satisfied adoptive families. The warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you know you have filled the void in someones heart or to see the sparkle in a child's eye. One Saturday morning, the cutest little girl I have ever seen came marching up my steps, her eyes were sparkling and you could see the excitement in her eyes and to see how her face lit up when I answered the door. She said to me, "I've come to take my kitty home!" Talk about a great feeling, my heart melted into a big pile of goo!
So, if I were to sum up the answer to the question of what I like most about being a pedigree cat breeder, I would have to say it’s the joy and love I have brought to so many families over the years!
